The picture I chose was to honor some friends of mine that I admire greatly. They have always been good people in the years I have known them and have been willing to help others whenever they could. In thinking about them, it reminded me that we need to reach out to others sometimes.
No matter who you are, sometimes bad things happen to good people. It is important that we be willing to reach out to people to offer them support, help if it’s needed or just to let them know we are here and they aren’t alone in whatever they are dealing with in their lives right now.
When I have dealt with some tragedy in my life, I can’t begin to say how much it meant to me when people would stop by, even for a few moments just to say hello. Or someone would call me and invite me to dinner to get me out of the house. When I had surgery a few weeks before Christmas, I had friends who brought me Christmas cookies and helped put up my Christmas tree. None of these things sound like a big deal, unless you’re struggling for some reason and then it really is a BIG deal. Small things do make a big difference for people. It’s the person on the receiving end who determines the size of a gesture because of the impact it has on them.
If you know someone who is having some struggles in their live, reach out with a kind word or an offer to have lunch. Just let them know that you are there if they need anything and remind them of that from time to time. It is a simple gesture with great impact. And more if us do it, then the world gets kinder and kinder and that has to be a good thing for all of us, don’t you think?
