Part of having a personal mission is the vision that goes with it. When we know what our mission is, then we can identify what we value that goes along with that mission. I have had a vision of how my life would be since I was a kid. I think most of have that kind of an image or vision. Then as we get older, our visions change somewhat with maturity and experience, and yet some of it stays the same.
My vision, when I was a kid, was that I wanted to travel, learn a lot of information so I would be good at something and I liked helping people, I just wasn’t sure how that would, or if it would, come together as my life. I finished high school, went to college, got a job and then realized this what not what I had in mind. I didn’t get the degree I wanted because I was told I couldn’t make a living with that degree. I didn’t get the job I dreamed of because I was told I needed to get any job to make money to make a living. And the first really job I had was certainly not very helpful to people, including me!
So I went back to school, with a lot of help from different people, and I got the degree I wanted. I then worked at several agencies as a counselor and I do feel that I was able to help people, but I had some concerns about the politics of agencies and this wasn’t quite my vision yet, but I was getting closer. Eventually, I opened a private practice and became an adjunct faculty at a local college which allowed me to teach. Also, I was more able to travel to different workshops or conventions when I was working for myself.
Currently, I work the schedule that I choose, I teach others, I help others, I travel and I can honestly say, I really like my life. I’m working on totally loving it, I just have some more tweaking to do to get there. It’s important to have a vision, but also to be willing to adjust your vision as you go along. It doesn’t fundamentally change, but some of the details change over time.
What’s your vision? Once again, take some time and write some things down. Just start the process and it will take on a life of it’s own, but don’t be put off by that. It’s fun and it allows us to have more control over our own lives. It doesn’t matter what you do, where you do it, or if it changes over time. It only matters that you create your OWN vision of your own life and then move in that direction. Have some fun with this and make life more fun in the process!
