As the holidays approach, many people are focused on the negative. They are lamenting how bad things are and how much they want, but don’t have. I deal with this with, not just clients, but family and friends.
I suggest to people to take inventory of their lives. How many friends do they have? How many family members? What is actually in their closets? We go through different areas of their lives and try to get them to really look at what exists in their lives that they may not be paying any attention to on a regular basis.
I believe it is very important for counselors to do the same thing. I think we can get caught up in all the negativity that comes into our offices most days. We can catch the feelings of lack and start to pay attention to that in our own lives.
I invite you to take inventory yourself. What is going Right in your life, both personally and professionally. If there is something you’re not happy with, what steps can you take to correct it?
As we get closer to Thanksgiving, take stock and remember to be thankful for all things that you have, have accomplished and have to look forward to in your life!
